Beetle

Beetle
The world's laziest, most lovable, work-shirking private represents every person's struggle against authority. Beetle is a typical American boy from Kansas City, Mo., who, although he never deliberately does anything bad, is always in the middle of trouble. And when he's not searching for an out-of-the-way place to take a nap, he's daydreaming about getting out of the Army. Beetle is also the brother of Lois Flagston, from the strip "Hi & Lois."

Sgt. Orville Snorkel
The volatile yet sensitive Sarge barks AND bites. But beneath it all, he's as shy and as awkward as they come. In fact, it's because of this innocence that Sarge is so happily married to his one and only love -- the Army. Also near and dear to his heart are his best friends: his dog Otto, and any amount of food he can pile up on his plate.

Otto

Otto
Every boy should have a dog. Sarge, being a boy at heart, got Otto, whether he deserved him or not. In his puppyhood, Otto was a real dog, walking on all fours and communicating with woofs and growls. Over the years, he became more human. Reader reaction was so positive when he donned the uniform in a 1969 strip, Otto has dressed ever since!

Gen. Amos T. Halftrack
"Now what?!" exclaims the golf-loving, politically incorrect and hopelessly inept commanding officer of Camp Swampy as he tries to figure out what's going on. But no matter how hard he tries to fit in with his men, his wife Martha, the Pentagon and the times, he just doesn't get it. The only places Gen. Halftrack seems to feel at home are at the Officers' Club and on the golf course. And now, after decades of shameless ogling and barrages of not-so-veiled sexual innuendos lobbed at Miss Buxley, his lovely secretary, the general's gotten his comeuppance: the Pentagon ordered him to undergo sensitivity training! Despite his epiphany and his contrite apology for his former offensive behavior, the general will never improve his leadership abilities or his golf scores, guaranteeing readers lots more laughs to come.

Miss Buxley
Gen. Halftrack's sassy but naive civilian secretary is the object of desire of most of the men on base. But fortunately for her, this blonde bombshell is totally oblivious to it! Maybe she can't type, and the only filing she's good at is her fingernails, but she's always one step ahead of her foolish old boss.

Miss Blips
General Halftrack’s other secretary. She is capable, intelligent and undoubtedly plain. She doesn’t just want equal rights with men – she’d like equal rights with other women as well!

Cookie

Cookie
The summation of every army chef who’s ever victimized the men with bouncy meatballs.

Rocky

Rocky
Camp Swampy’s resident anti-establishment writer, who runs the base’s underground newspaper and agitates for any current cause.

Lt. Fuzz
takes himself very seriously -- even though no one else does.

Lt. Flap
A macho leader on base and an outrageous dresser when he is kicking back off-base.

Specialist Chip Gizmo
A captain of technology, Chip Gizmo lives in his own world -- cyberspace. Spiky-haired, cross-eyed and rumpled, Gizmo has never encountered an electronic gadget he didn’t want to take apart.

Plato

Plato
The philosophical Scribbler, Plato has eloquently summed up the philosophy of Camp Swampy: "Success isn’t funny: failure is."

Martha Halftrack
General Amos Halftrack’s wife. The General may command thousands of men and reign supreme over Camp Swampy, but at home Martha is definitely in charge.

Zero

Zero
An innocent farm boy with the heart of a child. His name is a tip-off to his I.Q. He’s not really as mentally deficient as he is uniformed.

Killer Diller
Considers himself God’s gift to women. He spends every waking hour thinking of girls. The peaks on his barracks cap quiver every time he so much as thinks of one
